Working Mechanism: Gallup Hi-Aktiv 490 Concentrated Glyphosate Weed Killer
Barclay Gallup HI-Aktiv is a systemic herbicide that acts on foliage such as perennial grasses and broad-leaved weeds.
It works through translocation from vegetable plants, underground roots, rhizomes, and stolons.
When applied, leaves will begin to produce a redish colour and then transition to a yellowish colour before they die. Grass weeds are controlled quickly while broad-leaved weeds take a little longer for the results to show.
Gallup Hi-Aktiv 490 does all this by using a super concentrated dosage of glyphosate. Glyphosate is a non-selective ingredient meaning it will kill any plant that makes contact with it. It targets the enzymatic activity of a plant to render it dead. It seeps into the plan through the leaves and stalks of the weed.
It works all-year round and will biodegrade by bacteria in the soil which will break down the glyphosate into natural substances.
The half-life of Gallup 490 in loamy soils under summer conditions ranges from 3-4 weeks.
Ingredients
The main ingredient in Gallup 490 is Glyphosate also referred to as N(phosphonomenthyl) glycine from the Isopropylamine group. Its formula is C3H8NO5P. It also contains surfactant and water. These ingredients are non-hazardous to humans and the environment.
Suggested Usage
Gallup Hi-Aktiv 490 Concentrate should be used when the weeds have enough leaves and when they are still in the growth stage. It can be used on mineral or organic soils, hard surfaces, and ash and gravel.
It works best on perennial grass weeds when the plant’s leaves are fresh, green, and strong. The weed common couch/scutch is most vunerable to treatment when it is tillering, and new rhizomes are growing. This means that the weed should have 6 or 7 leaves with a size of atleast 13cm.
Couch/scutch grasses and other broad-leaved weeds should be treated anytime within mid spring to early fall. This is because plants undergoing drought, frost, extreme heat, or water logging can affect how well the product works.
Also, do not apply fertilizer, manure, pesticides or similar solutions within a week of using Gallup 490. Gallup

Knapsack Spraying Guidelines
There are several things you need to understand when you are about to spray the weed killer.
Do’s
- Spray during ideal temperatures ranging from 15-25 degrees Celsius
- Dispose of empty container safely
- Optimal spray time is during the afternoon
- Ensure the knapsack has a consistent nozzle flow rate and lance cut off valve
- Using clean water check to see if there are any leaks in the garden sprayer
- Read and follow the dosage recommendations supplied with your purchase
- Clean all equipment thoroughly after each use
- Avoid spilling or splashing to surrounding areas
Dont’s
- Do not fill knapsack sprayer over hard surfaces
- Apply when the weeds are under stress. Hot weather, freezing conditions, water-logging, or disease cause metabolism levels to drop making the weed killer less effective
- Do not fill the garden pressure sprayer near freshwater areas
- Do not drift the spray to surrounding areas

Final words
Barclay Gallup Hi-Aktiv 490 Concentrate Glyphosate weed killer does not have long-lasting herbicidal effect in soils after application. You should wait a week or two before you begin planting in agricultural or horticultural soils. Above all, ensure that the weeds have completely died off before beginning cultivation.
When dealing with care and storing equipment, make sure to thoroughly wash with a cleaning agent after every use to get rid of herbicide traces. This is especially important because it can have an adverse effect on future treatments. For instance, left over residue of the weed killer will increase the dilution making the mixture stronger than is allowed.
Store in a temperature zone between 0 degrees and 30 degrees Celsius.
