Brinton Patio Magic Review: Quick and Easy Fix

January 14, 2017 By Scott Harper Leave a Comment

All pavements will require a little basic care-taking at some point in time to keep them looking their best.

patio-weed-removerLuckily it is relatively easy to maintain good looking pavements, paths, and driveways with the right tools. One of the best products to use to control weed and mould on concrete or natural stone is Patio Magic.

Basic cleaning

Cleaning with soap and water is the most basic process you can use in fight mould and weeds. However, any surface overridden by mould or weeds will require on-going maintenance. To basic clean an affected area, you need to use water and an acid-free soap. Use a brush to scrub the surface to get rid of general dirt and debris.

Avoid using a power washer because it can cause loss of jointing material. Even though high-pressure jetting machines can work at removing dirt, debris, some weeds, it is better if you resort to using a different method.

Controlling Weeds

All natural and concrete surfaces will have a weed problem at some point in time. If you let detritus untreated on your surfaces, then weeds will likely germinate. Weeds grow into the paving by using the nutrients from the sand to fill joints on the pavement.

There is always the option to manually pull weeds off the surface by using tools such as a dutch hoe. The risk of using this method is you may not be able to pull the roots out to stop weed germination altogether.

Weed killers such as Patio Magic 5L can be effective in preventing re-colonisation.

Algae, Lichen, and Moss

Organic growth of algae, moss, or lichen is common on move hard surface pavements. They thrive in areas that are well-shaded or are under trees.

Algae are a green film or fluffy deposits prevalent on paving and stonework. They are small photosynthetic and polyphyletic organisms such as seaweeds (macroalgae)

Lichen is small organisms that are common on concrete and timber material. They are usually grey or yellow in colour with a leafy texture. The two types of interacting organisms that make up lichen are fungus and photobionts. The three kinds of lichens are foliose, fruticose, and crustose.

Moss are tiny flowerless plants that grow to a great coarse or yellow-green tufts. There are over 600 species of moss in the United Kingdom.

Patio Magic

brintons-patio-magicPatio Magic manufactured by Brinton Products is a concentrated, long-lasting, biodegradable, and anti-bacterial formula that works to kill weeds, algae, moss, and lichens. It is also marketed as an antiviral, disinfectant, fungicide/algaecide, and detergent.

Key benefits

  • Starts working in little as 3 days
  • Prevents re-growth for multiple months
  • Easy to use – dilute, apply, and dry
  • Biodegradable
  • Works on all hard surfaces
  • Contains no bleach or acid ingredients
  • Approved by HSE and PCS.
  • Safe for children and pets once dry

Working mechanism and ingredients

It kills all mould, algae, mildew, liverwort, lichens, and moss within 3 days. It has secondary slow-acting cleaning effects on many surfaces that help prevent re-growth of organic matter for multiple months.

Patio Magic is a biodegradable product that is not made from bleach, acids and is approved by the HSE and PCS. Some ingredients that are in this biocide are benzalkonium chloride, alcohols, C9-C11, and ethoxylated.

Suggested usage

Patio Magic is suitable for use in areas such as:

Tarmac and Asphalt driveways, brickwork, wood decking, wood sheds, printed concrete, brickwork, fencing, pathways, plaster, weatherboard, masonry, mortar, roofing, painted and glazed pots, gravel, greenhouses, garden furniture and ornaments, conservatories, York stone, PVC, tennis courts, glass, rendering, concrete pebble-dash, caravans, and golf courses.

Instructions

This product is to be sprayed with a low-pressure garden sprayer. To get excellent results dilute 1 part patio magic with 6 parts water. For every litre diluted, Patio Magic will cover 3.5 square metres horizontally to 7 square metres vertically.

Also, you want to apply only to dry surfaces so avoid using during rainy weather conditions. Patio Magic is hazardous to the eyes and skin, and for that reason, you should wear goggles, face mask, coveralls, boots, and gloves while spraying.

Furthermore, brush off any heavy moss to expose the stems so that Patio Magic can easily target the moss.

As a general rule, treated areas will be protected from re-growth for 6-9 months and up to 12 months if applied on wooden fencing.

Safety and precautions

When handling a biocide you want to adhere to all the safety rules and precautions.

  • Wear the appropriate protective equipment.
  • After each use, remember to wash all equipment thoroughly.
  • Prevent this biocide from leaking into the drainage system by using an absorbent material such as sand.
  • Store in a safe room temperature and dry space, out of reach of children.
  • Do not use in aquatic areas because this product is harmful to marine life.

Conclusion

Patio Magic does take a few days to work and works better when thick growths of organic matter are scraped before spraying. One treatment is usually enough to have a weed-free surface.
