The Verdone extra lawn weed killer by Scotts Miracle-Gro is a liquid concentrate that acts as a selective herbicide. It received a best buy award by Garden News Magazine in July 2011. The weed killer provides effective weed control in large areas without harming the grass. It is especially beneficial for landscapers and is effective in just a single application per year.
The weed killer is claimed to be effective on most common broad-leaved lawn weeds. It is suitable to be used on all established lawns and grassy areas and selectively kills the broad leaved weeds that cover and suffocate grass.
The weed killer is most effective in late spring or early summer, when it gets absorbed easily by the thriving weed as they grow and the leaves are broad, offering large surface area.
The effect of the Verdone extra becomes evident in just a few days, as it kills the weed. The weeds will wilt, turn brown and gradually die in 4 – 6 weeks, allowing the surrounding grass to munch on and gobble the resources. The result is a thriving lawn, garden or any such green area with complete annihilation of the weed for the year.
Features:
- Only one treatment required for season long control
- Selective treatment does not harm grass
- Can be used on lawns over 2 months old
- Children and pets can be allowed on the treated area once the spray has dried
- Coverage 660 sq. m (789 sq. yd.)
- 1 liter concentrate bottle supplied
Working mechanism
The Verdone extra lawn weed killer contains a special formula consisting of MCPA (ISO), Fluroxypyr, and Clopyralid, which effectively controls most common lawn weeds. It is a selective weed killer which is harmless to common lawn grasses while being effective towards broad leaved weeds. The weed killer comes as a concentrate and can be diluted for spraying with a sprayer or a watering can (the watering can is to be fitted with a fine rose before spraying).
Weeds will wilt, turn brown and die within 4 – 6 weeks.
Suggested Usage

Great for use in established lawns and grassy areas, the Verdone extra lawn weed killer is a selective weed killer aimed to save your grass cover. It destroys the entire unwanted flora that are covering and suffocating the grass on your turf.
The concentrate is to be diluted in water and can be used in a pressure sprayer or watering can. This makes the application quick and it swiftly covers the whole lawn. The concentrate gives coverage of up to 660 sq. m (789 sq. yd.). It doesn’t pose any long term harm to children and pets as they can be allowed to enter the treated area once the lawn is dried.
Covered spectrum
Covering almost all common lawn weeds, the Verdone extra lawn weed killer is both selective and effective. It covers common lawn weeds such as white clover, daisy, dandelion and plantain as well as more rarely occurring lesser trefoil (yellow suckling clover), black medick (a small leaved clover), common mouse-ear chickweed, yarrow, parsley-piert and the blue flowering speedwell.
Instructions
Here are the instructions to use the Verdone extra lawn weed killer:
- Dilute in water in your own pressure sprayer or watering can

Once thoroughly dried, children and pets can be allowed onto the treated area.

I can find no directions as far as when to water if there is no rain for a long period
Hi Gordon, if rain is not occurring in your area, it is best to water your plants or lawn once a week.
I cannot anywhere find out if this weed killer is absorbed through the leaves or (as seems more likely as an application lasts a season) through the roots. Do you know?
Hello Andrew, the verdone weed killer targets the leaves first and then makes its way into the root. It does not harm surrounding grass.
Does it work on creeping cinquefoil? Many thanks
weed requires lots of atenttion. the soil has to be perfect. as for seeds the darker, heavier and bigger the better. a good one wont float. they also need lots of light. about 18 hours. this is to increase the growth speed. then cut it 12 to make it flower. dont over water and dont let it go dry. just moist. look out for bugs. and find some natural fertilizer it uses alot of nutrients. WillVerdone Extra kill Yarrow in a lawn?

How long after using this product can I cut my grass
Hi Tracy, you should wait several hours after you have applied to the weed killer so that the lawn is completely dry.
is Verdone Extra harmful to birds, it would be difficult to keep the many birds in my garden off the lawn whilst the liquid is drying, I am concerned they will get the liquid on there legs and beak when looking for worms, are they harmed too??
The weed killer should be dry before small animals and pets make contact with the applied area. Small amounts of exposure may not cause significant damage but if contact is prolonged it can lead to gastrointestinal and other problems.
A solution to this problem is to target the weeds individually using the hozelock wonderweeder so that you only apply the weed killer to the areas you want to clear.
This goes by Weedol lawn weed killer now, and there is one very big con and thats CLOPYRALID, one of the active ingredients.
The problem is long after the weed has died, if it ends up in compost (through lawn clippings) it will effect any plants the compost is used in, It is particularly damaging to peas, tomatoes and sunflowers and can render potatoes, lettuce and spinach inedible
Hello Simon, I’m surprised you have had that experience. This weed killer is selective and it doesn’t target surrounding plants. Again, this product is marketed for the maintenance of lawns and other types of applications are best if you use a different weed killer. Also, this product is recommended to not be used early spring and late summer, If you find use a weedicide does not work for you, I suggest you look into getting a weed puller such as the fiskars weed puller.
Put it on the lawn this morning and it rain unexpectedly this afternoon. Will it still work or will I need to treat it again?
